Job Purpose

The Deputy Head Teacher be supporting the Head Teacher with the day-to-day management of the school as well as taking a lead role in the strategic direction of the school. Deputise and assume full responsibility for the school in the absence of the Headteacher. As a member of the leadership team, the Deputy Head Teacher will play a major role in formulating the culture, vision, aims and objectives of the school, establishing the policies through which they shall be achieved, managing staff and resources to achieve the aims and objectives and monitor and evaluate progress towards their achievement. Contribute to rigorous and on-going self-evaluation and take responsibility for leading specific areas/initiatives to secure further school-wide improvements. 


Summary of Key Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for the strategic development and implementation of the curriculum, ensuring that academic standards are consistently upheld. 
  • Oversee examinations and assessments in accordance with the school’s visions and values and in line with set government guidance.
  • Supervise and manage the daily operations of the school
  • Contribute to the school’s strategic planning process, particularly in areas related to curriculum development and improvement.
  • Work closely with the senior leadership team to align curriculum goals with the overall vision and objectives of the school.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of a dynamic and engaging curriculum that aligns with national standards and educational best practices.
  • Collaborate with department heads and teaching staff to design and enhance curriculum content, ensuring it meets the needs of diverse learners.
  • Assist the Headteacher by providing dynamic leadership and management in support of the school’s vision and values in everyday work and practice
  • Develop and motivate staff, set high expectations, embed learning and teaching strategies and raise achievement
  • Undertake the full range of duties and responsibilities, as required by the Headteacher, set out in The School Teachers Pay and Conditions of Service
  • Develop a culture that enables all staff to work collaboratively, share knowledge and understanding, celebrate success and accept responsibility for outcomes • Contribute to the shaping of the school’s three-year strategic vision, the annual Improvement Plan and Self Evaluation process • Oversee and lead specific elements of the school improvement strategy as defined by the Headteacher
  • Plan work in accordance with the set Curriculum Area Programmes of Study
  • Take account of all students’ prior levels of attainment and use them to plan challenging lessons and set future targets
  • Foster positive relationships with external educational partners, sharing best practices, and exploring opportunities for collaboration to enhance the curriculum.  Represent the school at relevant curriculum-related events and forums.
  • Implement strategies to challenge and support all students, including those with varying abilities and learning styles.

Primary Areas of Accountability:

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Early Childhood Education or related
  • Must have a minimum of 4-5 years’ experience in Early Childhood  education or similar
  • Excellent understanding of the principals of child development and preschool educational methods
  • Must have proven experience of assisting management or deputizing the Head Teacher 
  • Exposure to international curricula will be a plus
  • Must have experience of assessment without levels including tracking pupil progress
  • Excellent knowledge of monitoring and school self-evaluation as a tool for improvement
  • Ability to set high standards and act as a positive role model, leading by example
  • Skilled at leading high quality professional learning and development and staff meetings
  • Must have a valid practicing certificate from the Teaching Council of Zambia (A MUST)
